Interstate 70. Because the blue haze of the river gives the effect of smoke to
the hills, the Indians referred to the hills as "Smoky Hills." *

Smoky Hill Chapter NSDAR takes its name from the aptly-named hills of this region of
Kansas. The chapter organized 11 May 1937. The twenty-three organizing members were
descendants of pioneers settlers who came to settle in Ellsworth County in the 1860s and
1870s.
During the years, chapter members have worked to achieve DAR Objectives of
Historical Preservation, Promotion of Education, and Patriotic Endeavor. DAR is a volunteer
service organization whose work is done primarily under a committee system. To learn more about

During World War II, Smoky Hill Chapter members sewed, knitted, and made cookies for
the troops, including those stationed at Smoky Hill Air Base in Salina.
A special interest of the chapter is recording genealogical records. Some of the records
contributed to the Genealogical Records Committee include 7 volumes of Ellsworth County
cemetery records and county census records.
Our Meetings
Chapter meetings are held on the first Monday of each month, September through May, at
2:00 p.m. Guests are always welcome! Please email
