Our chapter was organized February 5, 1916, in the city of Abilene, Kansas. The first members were honored to name the chapter for their city. "Abilene" means city of the plains.
The first regent of our chapter was Minnie Wilcox (Mrs. F. A.). She and the charter members laid out a path the chapter has followed in the ensuing years: honoring our heritage and our community.
Among the accomplishments of our chapter:
Placing the name of Dwight Eisenhower, our native son, in the Valley Forge Bell Tower, 1946.
Joining other Kansas chapters in placing five pylons at the Eisenhower Center.
Placing permanent historical markers in our community:
- Site of the Hersey Cabin
- Mud Creek Ford and the Overland Trail
- Terminus of the Texas Cattle Trail
- Texas Street
- Drovers Cottage
- Shipping Yards
- First School Building
- Sand Springs -- Abilene, The End of the Chisholm Trail
- Pioneer Burial Ground
