90th Anniversary
Sarah Steward Celebrates their 90th Anniversary

Sarah Steward Chapter was organized on April 18, 1931, in Smith Center, Kansas. Sarah Steward was the wife of the patriot of the Organizing Vice Regent, Alice Steward Smith. In 1933, the chapter placed a marker at the burial site of Sarah and her husband.

The chapter surveyed and indexed all the Smith County cemeteries, publishing these in two volumes. The second volume also contains the result of an interesting high school project sponsored by the chapter. Students were encouraged to interview the oldest county resident they knew. The result was a fascinating history of Smith County from a pioneer's viewpoint. The chapter also indexed the 1880 and 1900 U.S. Census of Smith County.

Sarah Steward is proud to have three state Outstanding Juniors chosen from its membership. Other chapter members have served as State Regent, Vice President General, State Librarian, and State Chaplain.

On June 14, 2014, Flag Day, the Sarah Steward Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution hosted the re-dedication of the DAR marker originally placed at the historic site of the "Home On The Range" Cabin in 1997 and the dedication of a flag and flag pole recently donated by the chapter as our gift toward the restoration project of the Higley Cabin.

Our State Regent Brenda Dooley brought greetings from the Kansas State Society. Honorary State Regent Patricia Dorsch Traffas gave the history of the cabin, Kristi Wolters Kocher, Past State Chaplain offered the invocation and benediction and assisted in the re-dedication ceremony. Joyce Jones, Regent of the chapter welcomed the group to this very cabin where Dr. Brewster Higley penned the words to "Home on the Range" over 140 years ago. Newly elected Chapter Regent, Carolyn Peterson and Joyce Jones led in the dedication of the flag and flag pole.

Meetings are held at 2:00 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month, September through April. Prospective members are welcome to attend. Please contact us for more information, using the link below.
