About Our Chapter
Marais des Cygnes - Marsh of the
Swans
Our chapter organized in Paola, Kansas, 10
December 1980. Our members come primarily from Paola, Louisburg, and Osawatomie
in Miami County, with some members from southern Johnson County and even out
of state. The name Marais des Cygnes was chosen for the river which
flows through Miami County. The French named the waterway for the many swans
they saw on the swamps along the river.
The Dar Motto: God, Home & Country
Our chapter provides leadership in DAR on the
district and state levels. We annually participate in the volunteer service
activities of the organization that promote its objectives of Historic
Preservation, Promotion of Education, and Patriotic Endeavor.
Our chapter has been active in community affairs
since its beginning, presenting Flags of the USA to the cities of Paola,
Osawatomie, and Louisburg. We also have given Flags of the USA to the Paola
Veterans of Foreign Wars for assembling the Avenue of Flags at Paola Cemetery.
We have provided copies of the U. S. Constitution to area schools, and one member
has been active as a volunteer teacher at Paola elementary schools. Other
members contribute many volunteer service hours to the Swan River
Museum in Paola. We participate in providing comfort items to the VA Medical
Center in Topeka.
We have conducted genealogy workshops, and have taken part in a number of
community events and parades. Click here to see photos
of some of our activities.
Our chapter meets monthly from October through May, inclusive. Meetings are
