The John Athey Chapter began with sixteen members who organized in August of 1949. Mrs. J. E. Mitchem was the organizing regent. Mrs. Mitchem's twin sister, Mrs. Palmer H. Cushman, did much of the genealogical research needed to admit new members, and the chapter honored the two by choosing the name of their ancestor for the chapter name.

John Athey was born in 1730 and served as a corporal from Virginia during the Revolutionary War. He married Sarah Foster, daughter of Colonel Foster, and died in 1830.

John Athey Chapter is especially proud to have two members who served their nation as members of the U.S. Navy during World War II: Maud Leachment Friesen and Donna Peterson West. The chapter is committed to America's veterans and honors them in local care centers and at Fort Dodge on Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Christmas, and birthdays.

The chapter has sponsored two Oakley-area teachers who won the state award for Outstanding Teacher of American History.

Chapter members attend a wide variety of community events and spread the word about DAR and its motto, "God, Home, and Country," whenever they can. When the time capsule at the Logan County Courthouse in Oakley is opened ~ many years from now ~ we'll be there!

John Athey Chapter serves six Kansas counties in Northwest Kansas, and members enjoy meeting in the different areas each year. Meetings are held at 10:00 a.m. on the fourth Wednesday of the months of September, October, March, and April. Prospective members are welcome to attend.
